Perfect Picks #10: a weekly roundup of resources for online creatives looking to ditch perfect
Welcome to this week’s edition of Perfect Picks, my friend! Each week, I’ll share a few encouraging words + behind-the-scenes insights into my daily perfectionism journal with real-life examples of how I manage when my perfectionism pops up.
Plus, a roundup of useful and inspiring resources for online creatives and recovering perfectionists. Think: practical tips, thought-provoking blog posts + #allthethings I've been loving lately.
Let’s get to it.
Perfectly imperfect encouragement
Do you ever feel 'not normal'? Because I definitely am not normal. Today I had a lovely conversation with a coworker about the insecurities we feel in our job. I made a stupid mistake + I've been vigilant ever since - perhaps a little too vigilant where it becomes paralyzing. That moment of connection + empathy, of "hey, I struggle with this too" was what I truly needed today. I didn't realize how much.
I've always felt like an outsider, like I don't fit in, like I'm not normal. And I guess I'm not. I don't drink. I don't go out. I don't gossip or talk about superficial stuff. I don't particularly care for music or following celebrities. I don't take Ubers (ever!).
I AM different. I am *me*. Just like you are *you*. Wanting to fit in is a natural, biological need we have, but when it takes over and makes you feel inadequate, that's when it's time to change your mindset about that particular situation. If you've been stuck in a state of inadequacy for far too long, remember this. You are yourself and, therefore, you are normal. Different, unique, but normal.
Snippets from my perfectionism journal
My perfectionism showed up this week:
as hardcore procrastination on doing something I was afraid of starting up, because it's new, different + far outside of my comfort zone
Snippets from my gratitude list
This week I was grateful for...
wearing a belt
a bowl of yummy yoghurt
seeing my salary deposited in my checking account
monetary freedom + relief
a relaxing evening
seeing my Pinterest strategy starting to work
being scared because it means I'm going in the right direction
a warm + comfy blanket
devouring a book
the tension in the story
escaping into a different world
Here’s my offering of inspiring reads for you this week. As always, take what you need.

"So instead of allowing anxiety to be an excuse or something to blame my failures on, I choose to be brave and courageous with myself. I choose to not allow anxiety to hold me back."

"I'm a 33-year-old woman. Shouldn't I not be doing the things I'm "supposed" to be doing? Shouldn't I be settling down? I don't know what any of that stuff means anymore. I don't think it means anything for me. But the questions still come up as "shouldn't I be doing something else?". And, again, it's because culturally the norm is to do XYZ, it's to get the job, to get married, buy a house, have kids, or whatever that looks like for people. So when you are intentionally opting out, it's not easy and then when you don't have the answers it's hard to talk about."

“So, here’s a question for you: How would your life look different without that hurry? How would your business look different without that ever present sense of busy-ness? What would you do differently? What would you prioritize? What would you want to accomplish? That’s where slow living and slow business comes in. It’s about actively choosing to make those sorts of changes.”

“You can do all of the things, all of the time, 100% perfectly (hands up if you're a type-A personality like me?) but until you understand that this one little word is the thing that's either going to make or break your business, it's all not really worth much. It wasn't until I wore myself ragged, trying to keep up with all the deadlines I'd set myself and make sure I was meeting all the personal pressures I'd created for myself, that I really understood the benefits of working with your mindset.”
