7 things I've learned from helping my clients ditch perfect + take action on their creative ideas
What’s holding you back from doing the work to overcome your perfectionism and, finally, take action on your big creative ideas?
Ever since launching my 1-on-1 coaching program, I’ve been so lucky to have worked with dozens of creative women in helping them go from stressed-out perfectionist to recovering perfectionist, from procrastination, self-doubt + overwhelm to imperfect action-takers.
Having a backstage pass to so many transformations in my clients’ creative work (and personal lives, too!), has taught me a thing or two about raising your hand + saying yes to doing the scary thing.
Feeling this way is not a sign to quit or to not invest in yourself. In fact, feeling this way is how you KNOW you’ve taken the right step. Because saying hell-to-the-no to your perfectionism is supposed to scare the hell out of you.
You’ve been carrying around your perfectionism for years. It’s been your trusted companion, your go-to survival mechanism, the devil you know. If overcoming perfectionism was easy, you’d done so already.
But trust me, you’ve got what it takes. You can do this. Find strength in the women who’ve gone through the process before you. If they can do it, so can you.
So, without further adieu, here’s what I've learned from helping my clients (brave women just like you and me!) overcome their perfectionism + take action on their big creative ideas.
1. EVERYONE IS SCARED
Everyone. Even when they know it's right for them. Even when they're excited. Having more resources, more experience, or more time, doesn’t make you less afraid.
Feeling fear is completely normal. It isn’t a sign of you not measuring up and it also isn’t a predictor of failure. In fact, it’s a sign of courage.
2. IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE SCARY
Doing something new, pushing yourself, stepping outside of your comfort zone, starting to do the work to better yourself... is terrifying.
It's totally normal to feel this way, so push through. You've already started. Reading this blog post was your first step. Now, keep going. Show up for yourself by investing in yourself.

3. THERE’S NO “RIGHT TIME” TO START
Stop waiting for the perfect time to start. There isn’t one!
There’s never going to be a perfect time for you to take action. There’s never going to be a perfect time for you to launch that podcast, write that book, or create that e-course.
The only right time is right now.
4. TAKING ACTION GETS RESULTS
One tiny action step leads to taking more action, which leads to the results you’re dreaming of.
As a perfectionist, you’re all too familiar with procrastination, but the way out of perfectionism is not through waiting. It’s through taking action.
The world is waiting for you to start something. So, start.
5. IT’S GOING TO BE MESSY
Even when there are simple steps to follow, things get messy. You get sick. Your power goes out. You embarrass yourself. You lose your perfectionism journal. You order pizza for dinner way too many times.
Going from stressed-out perfectionist to recovering perfectionist is not going to be a straight line. It’s going to be a messy, imperfect, ‘two steps forward, one step back’-kinda thing.
There's no tidy way to do something you've never done before.
6. IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT LETTING GO OF PERFECT
Overcoming your perfectionism affects how you think about yourself, how you contribute + how you relate to the world. Perfectionism isn’t just what you do sometimes, it’s very much who you are.
In order to change your perfectionistic habits, you will have to change part of you. This feels big, because it *is* big. Treat it with respect + get the support you need.
7. YOU’RE FAR MORE CAPABLE THAN YOU THINK
It can be really hard to see yourself in a different way or to see a different future for yourself. I've never had a client who wasn't capable of so much more than they were doing. Perfectionism makes you blind to a lot of your own worth, strengths + talents.
Believe me: there may be a gap between where you are and where you want to go, but that gap isn’t nearly as big as you think.
