Why I'm calling BS on work-life balance

I'm calling it.

That’s right. I'm calling BS on work-life balance.

Yes, you read that right. I’m taking a firm position against work-life balance. Or better said, against the type of “balance” that’s talked about so much in magazines and on television.

Think about it…

How many tv shows have you watched where they talk about how it’s possible for women to “have it all” and then they run a commercial shaming us for not being the perfect mom or the perfect girlfriend in order to sell a product?

When flipping through your favorite magazine, how many articles have you come across detailing how difficult it is for women to combine our careers, running a household, taking care of children or parents, having a social life, living healthy and working out, and having a little spare time for ourselves?

Ditch Perfect: my slow + sustainable approach to running a creative business

Life has a way of throwing curveballs when you least expect it.

If you’ve been hanging out with me on Instagram recently, you know that I’ve been busy dodging curveballs over the last few months.

From learning to manage my chronic illness to navigating a severe depression... it all resulted in a dramatic shift in my personal life and in my business too.

I've had to prioritize my mental health over any kind of social life and other outside expectations, put some firm boundaries in place to guard my energy + slow down significantly, which led me to discover the slow living movement.

Plus, I don’t believe in separating work and life in two neat little boxes. My work infuses my life and my life inspires my work.

I’m still very much in the beginning stages of recalibrating my life and my business + prioritizing a slow and steady lifestyle for myself. I can’t wait what this lifestyle, this business philosophy, this Ditch Perfect way has in store for me in the months to come.

But here’s what I believe about ditching perfect + embracing slow living and slow business.

Here’s where I got started.

Is business growth always a good thing?

I’ve been really interested in the concept of prioritizing lately. As an online creative dealing with chronic illness, I’m constantly putting certain things that I know will help my business grow on hold to focus on one single project.

That’s the nature of chronic illness and having to manage my (limited) energy wisely. But it also leads to feeling ‘left behind’, sometimes.

It got me thinking...
